Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • ¼ oz active dry yeast
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 units eggs beaten
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 7 cups flour
  • ¼ cup shortening melted
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 unit oil for frying
  • 1 cup powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions 

  1. 1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. 2. Add the remaining sugar, eggs, evaporated milk, and mix well.
  3. 3. Gradually add 4 cups of flour, mixing until smooth. Add the shortening and salt, then the remaining flour. Mix until dough is smooth.
  4. 4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  5. 5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to ¼ inch thickness. Cut into 2-inch squares.
  6. 6. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the dough squares in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  7. 7. Drain on paper towels and dust generously with powdered sugar. Serve warm.
